Chunk in Check

I’m shooting for maintenance, but it seems I’m still shedding little bits here and there, and I think I’m down another 1-2lbs.  I either have a parasite, or I’ve discovered a dieting secret worth writing a book about.  It’ll be titled Milk Yourself Skinny, and I’ll be encouraging all readers to buy a breast pump and start “mooing.”  I’d put myself on the cover in this pose:

Breast Pump

{That’s a breast pump;}

If my weight loss is attributable to the former, my book would be titled Just Swallow This, The Gift to Dieters That Keeps on Giving, with this image on the cover:

tapeworm_1

{It’s a tapeworm;}

Best sellers in the making, I know.  And in case you’re as obsessed with parasitology as I am, here’s a bbc news story from a long time ago, but totally worth reading for the sheer shock value!  I came across it when I googled “tapeworm.”

Since my focus is now on toning, I am committed to working out (running 3-5 days, wii fit, and/or long walks) 5-6 days a week.  Travis and I have picked out a really fun race to train for.  I haven’t decided yet if I’ll do the 1/2 or full marathon.  It’s in early May, just before we hope to leave for Vietnam (more on that later).  I’ll make these weekly posts more about my marathon training if we decide to commit to the full thing.

Other than my obviously brilliant, probably soon-to-be-best-seller suggestions of getting your hands on either a breast pump or parasite, does anyone else have any dieting tips you’d like to add?  Things that have / have not worked for you?  I have to say, the one that has helped me the most was the “no eating after 7″ rule someone suggested.  I’m also still doing the no bread, no sugar, limited alcohol, lots of water thing.  The other new strategy I’ve employed that is helping me with my runs is drinking my coffee right before my run (along with lots of water), which gives me the energy to really push myself and make my runs count.

I just love the anticipation of never knowing what to expect on your blog! From tits to tapeworms all in the same post…haha.

Amen, Erica!

I haven’t been in too vocal with the Chunk the Chunk challenge from the beginning, but it has motivated me…. I’m just always late to get on board! I will say that one thing that has helped me eat less without going hungry is drink a bottle of water about 20-30 minutes before the time I normally eat. It helps fill me up with less calories.

I ate something small and healthy every 2 hours during the day, never letting myself go hungry and drink lots of water and I lost 5lbs in one month. I only had to walk for 30 minutes each day. I had to stop cause it was so hard to remember to eat every 2 hours but if you can do that it works. The trick is to eat so you don’t feel hungry then stop and what ever activities you can do will make your body metabolism goes into hard drive so anything you eat gets utilized and not turn to fats. I took care of my mom who was diabetic and thats what her doctor recommended and he said that kind of eating habits is good for anyone who wants to lose weight too. I hope that helps. Good luck.

Are you still doing the no sugar, no bread thing? I am with you on the nursing trick but I think you also have to be motivated to not stuff your face all the time, because breastfeeding also makes me SO famished. If I try to watch it (i.e. no chips), exercise a little, and cut the alcohol, I definitely see a difference. It’s just hard to stay motivated..

Ok, so I have a few things about this post that may seem somewhat random.
First, I thought you looked really skinny in the pick from yesterday(?) where you all were outside and I think you had Fin in a pack. I meant to tell you that earlier.
Second, I am so with you on parasitology. That whole world is just so wierd and yet ingenious. I always said I should just swallow a tape worm.
Lastly, you can’t just say the words “leave for Veitnam” and leave us hanging! Are you going there for work? And, are you robbing banks and I just don’t know about it!?:) You talk about debt and then talk about Wii fit and travel to Vietnam. I’m not doing something right, here..:)

Char - thanks for the skinny comment. As for the robbing banks…haha! I think they’re robbing us, actually. I’ve mentioned our possible trip to Vietnam in May several times before and plan to share more details in the future when I know it’s a go. It’s for a public health project and I’m only able to go if funding comes through. My grant proposal is being presented in March, so we’ll know then. Travis is also working on something within another department that may help get his part of the trip funded as well.

I’m telling you what, I’ve seen MANY women who really stick with the nursing for the long haul (past 6 months) that shed pounds like nothing. I think it is the reward for the gift you are giving your child and all the sacrifice that goes with it (including the wonderful visual you posted).

As for diet secret other than to keep milking as long as you can stand it but sooner than that horrible video you linked about the 7 or 8 year olds….ah yes. Back on track. Sometimes when I am losing my motivation or do NOT want to get on that treadmill, I think to myself “this could quite literally be the ONLY alone time you have today” and that pretty much gets me moving. My other tip is ZONE bars. I started every morning with these and swear by them. I wasn’t hungry between meals, it was a good start tothe day and was good for fiber etc. I count calories so it is a good chunk of cals but worth it if it hold me from sneaking into the cupboard for a treat. Also, my aunt says when you are hungry eat a green apple to ease the hunger. It works! You are doing great wasting away to nothing! I am also training for a 1/2 at the end of March. With two littles it is challenging. Oh, and did I mention Ilive in MN where its just a titch nipply. ;)

Laurie,
Sorry I didn’t remember you mentioning your trip to Vietnam. I think I do remember something from while ago now that you say it. Damn the mommy brain!:) In your propasal, I think you should put in there that you will need an assistant, a scribe if you will, who is a biologist. I know a good one…(wink, wink!)
Seriously, I do hope that comes through for you guys.

Laurie,
How does the “no sugar” thing work? Are you talking absolutely NO sugar or just limiting amounts?

Thanks!

Wow. Love the bbc article. It’s hard to pick a favourite, although I’m leaning towrd the leech.

As for chunk chucking, do it now y’all before you get as old as I am. When I was in my 20s and 30s, I could lose 5 lbs practically just by thinking about it. Now, in my late 40s, it takes a little more effort to stay relatively slim.

I seem to be allergic to the sulfites in the novocaine shot I received for dental work 8 weeks ago. Because my nerves are STILL HEALING, I have little or no appetite. Just the thought of putting something in my mouth makes me a bit queezy. Didn’t plan to lose weight this way, but that’s what’s happened!

Breast pump or parasite? Hmmm…I’ll take either one. This chunk is not going anywhere. Damn!

13 hkat { 01.22.09 at 7:19 pm }

ohmygod!! when i read that everybody has parasites(which includes tapeworms) i about lost it. the thought of a worm hanging out of my nose or burrowing in my body just sends shivers throughout my whole body. that article is gross but curiously interesting! i love your blog!

14 Emily { 01.22.09 at 7:30 pm }

I am mooing and pumping as I read your blog and hoping that’s all it takes because I don’t like worms or diets.

15 Nicki { 01.22.09 at 8:07 pm }

I totally saw your flickr feed before I read this post and was DYING to know what breastpumps and tapeworms have in common! I should have guessed!!! LOL

I never lost a single pound nursing which really sucks since I nursed a combined total of 14 years!!! I got ripped off!

I am switching diet gears (more on that in email if you are curious) but I’m down 18 lbs which makes me happy. Just a million to go!!

Hey Mindy - my “no sugar” rule just applies to desserts. I’ll eat fruit, cereal, fiber bars, etc. Just no ice cream, cookies, or other “treats.”

I’ve never dieted, but I hadn’t noticed before my son was born that I’d gained a size or two. Once the new born was in the house, I was suddenly not eating man-sized portions, second or third helpings, or eating in front of the TV. (Doubt you have time for any of that either!)

I also started eating healthier. I quit eating out once or twice weekly for lunch, I don’t eat the fried or processed/preserved foods like I used to. I do love my carbs and dairy, though, so I don’t cut that out.

The first two months of his life, I lost weight. The constant running after a baby and toddler has kept me in better shape than I’d be (since I also haven’t run since he was born). But now it’s starting to catch up. I have time to sit down for meals with him, and I’m not taking care of myself. So I’ll be pounding the pavement once the weather allows and I can get up my motivation!
