Let’s Chuck the Chunk!
First, congrats to Wendy for winning the Sloppy Baby giveaway! Stay-tuned for another giveaway later today…you might want to be one of the first entries in this one. I’m just sayin’, so keep your eyes peeled and I’ll get it up as soon as I can.
OK, as for the weight loss stuff, thanks for your input! You guys have totally motivated me to DO THIS THING (chuck the chunk, that is). Paula reminded me to add the "drink more water" part and replace my carb fiber with veggie fiber to my plan. When I first started trying to drop the Finley pounds (this has been a saga; let’s not forget I gained 50 during pregnancy…that’s about 10lbs per foot of me, if only I’d gained it proportionately!), my rule was that I started each day with 4 tall glasses of water. No caffeine or anything else allowed to enter my mouth until I’d downed all 4 glasses. That ensured good hydration and an adequate supply of breastmilk for Fin. I think I’ll implement that again. Also, so many of you added the "don’t eat after 7ish" rule that is brilliant…if I can swing it. That one is hard for me since Travis doesn’t get home much before then and leading up to the kids’ bedtimes is always such a scramble that I never have time to eat then. I’m going to try to getting dinner going earlier and maybe try and have it made for Travis instead of taking care of the kids and waiting until he makes dinner for the 2 of us to eat. One thing I noticed a lot of people do that I don’t is cut out all beverages but water. I do NOT drink sodas or drinks with calories, but I do drink stuff like Fresca. It’s calorie free (but has aspartame Nicki;), refreshing, filling, and kind of replaces a snack when I would otherwise be eating out of boredom. I also use Diet Coke as a crutch for those reasons plus the added benefit of speeding up my metabolism because of the caffeine (although now that I’m drinking an espresso or 2 per day, I’ve cut out the diet cokes - it’s just too much caffeine). Admittedly, caffeine and aspartame are not the healthiest of weight loss tools, but they do work. I just have to limit myself because I’m still breastfeeding and Finley doesn’t really need a lot of that crap!
OH, speaking of Finley…she weighs 14.5lbs!! She loves that 5th percentile, and it looks pretty cute on her. She’s proportionate, and I was in that percentile until, well, forever, too so there’s nothing to worry about with her size. If you didn’t see my Tweets, she spiked a 103.1 fever after we got home from the Botanical Gardens yesterday. It was 4:30pm, but our family doc’s office is awesome and decided to stay late to see her so that we wouldn’t have to go to urgent care or the ER. I had been watching her all day, but thought it was just a URI since it’d be just a low grade fever with congestion. When she spiked, I knew it was her ear…and sure enough, it was. So she’s on antibiotics now and I actually slept (because she did) from 10pm-3am last night, which is a big improvement! I feel like a million bucks…although I probably look like a cheap hooker since I’m wearing only my new super bra and undies (I HATE having the heat on over 68, but the babies’ needs come first of course;).
So anyway, "Weigh-In Wednesdays" or "Weight Loss Wednesdays" sounds good to people? Let’s do it! We can have discussions in the comments as usual, but maybe I’ll also use a Mr. Linky thing for Wednesday’s posts so those of you with blogs can put your "Weigh-In Wednesday" posts up and we can all see what worked or didn’t work for you that week. There’ll also still be a comments section for those who are participating without a blog. I’m going to start, GASP, weighing myself so I can see if I’m up or down each week and by how much in order to gage the diet strategies. I’m going to keep a log of what I’m eating, including any crap I try to sneak, and I’ll report how I did each Wednesday. I look forward to hearing from you guys too about your workouts, eating, weighing, energy levels, and how you’re feeling about yourselves each week. Also, I’m going to post our collective weight loss on the sidebar of my blog. Each week, when we check in with each other, we’ll say if we’re + or -, and by how much from our starting point (current weight). We NEVER have to mention our actual weight, or BMI…that would just be depressing for me. We’ll be honest, and DO NOT feel bad if you have a + week. We can track our collective progress that way, kinda like Biggest Loser. Maybe we’ll do a super star of the week or something for whomever has had the most successful week and I’ll post that person on the sidebar along with our collective weight loss. I promise not to call you The Biggest Loser or anything! As a commenter pointed out, this is the WORST possible time to try and lose, and obviously, there will be a few days of exceptions around the holidays. But just maybe this will make us gain a little less than usual around Thanksgiving and the holidays? That’s my hope anyway. Thoughts? Suggestions? I think this will make the whole diet thing a little more fun, and hopefully a little more successful since we’re sort of doing it collectively. Who’s in?

Ok…I’ll be the first to admit that my fat a$$ needs to chuck the chunk. I can’t use the “I had a baby” excuse anymore…my kid is 4. So yes count me in…are we starting this coming Wed? This is going to be painful!!!
oh…and add my sister too…she is busy getting ready for her NY trip but wants to be added…so Bunny’s Mom is in too. She wanted me to let you know she is a lazy fat a$$ and might need some extra encouragement…I swear these are her words and not mine….I am not that mean.
OMG! This might be just the accountability that I need. Woo! I’ve been doing well with my wii fit (about -1lb per week) but I need to up the ante a bit.
Yup, accountability is what does it for me. I might even post my (horrifying) weight. The social humiliation factor is a very big motivator. It’s the same reason I refuse to by new larger gym clothes. If I’m forced to go to the gym, day after day, in too tight pants that treat everyone else to a a little cellulite-through-the-pants show, I’m more likely to do my best to look a little less offensive in them. I’ve even taking to wearing them around the house, which I’m sure is just as enjoyable for the FedEx man, mail woman, husband, and any other unfortunate soul who stops by. Really, it’s humiliating AND motivating all at once. so, yeah, let’s do it. It can’t get any worse for me than my daily gym experiences.
Hope Miss Finley feels better soon!
I’m in! I need some motivation and encouragement since my first 10 days were such an abysmal failure in the weight loss department despite my perfection. Depressing. Plus it’s my biannual “I quit, I”m locking myself in the bedroom” week which is never good for the weight since I stress-starve so when I get over myself, I’m going to have to force myself NOT to “celebrate” - my biggest eating problem.
So I won’t ride you about the aspartame except that I’m totally going to say I told you so when you show up with MS -like brain lesions in another 5 years. Just sayin’!
Seriously though I thought there was some pretty decent evidence that aspartame, sucrulose and other artificial sweeteners trick the body into gaining anyway? If nothing else works you might want to just TRY cutting it out.
I’m in - I have until Jan. 3rd when I go back to work and at the moments there are no work pants in my closet that will fit.
I’m in, too. I must be wearing the same pants as Laura!
Must be on the way to hotness by New Year’s Eve!!!
I’m in…great idea!
Shit, really Nicki?? I’ll read up on it tonight when the kids go to bed…all I read was blah blah blah about brain something or other, but when you wrote about aspartame tricking me into THINKING they’re skinny pills, when really, they’re fat pills?? Now THAT is unacceptable! I’ll get back to you on that thought.
I thought I posted earlier, but I’m in..
yeah, I did post earlier cause I went to the work of cutting and pasting a link-
here is my helpful tool:

And yeah, I have heard that about all the fake sweetners too, that’s why I went back to sugar- if you have to use a non-sugar sweetner use stevia- its all natural and made from a leaf- the taste is a little differeent, but you get used to it.
I am so in- I mean, if you saw my comment on Laura’s blog about my flammable thighs, I obviously need some help. I am just going to be a bit busy for the next few weeks!
[...] that I have to take, so much for packing light. I better get back to work. Oh yeah I joined the chuck the chunk challenge. We’ll see how I do after a week of bagels and [...]
In! Hope I don’t regret this. I always have a hard time staying motivated, and with working in an office and sitting on my well-padded butt all day. . .well, it’s been way too easy to keep putting this weight on.
hey laur,
I’d be in on this weight loss thing, if I weren’t preggo again. Anyway, have been losing some weight because of stress of residency and morning sickness. I will say that there have been studies on weight loss comparing people who drank diet soda to those who didn’t and those who didn’t loss significantly more weight. I don’t have the article off-hand, but look it up. Good luck on your interview — let me know how it goes!
