Almost Under Control
So I thought the c-section complications were on the out and out…but it looks like I might have an infection brewing. Sweet. I am holding off going to the ER for now and just keeping a close eye on the incision and my temperature. I made Travis draw a line around the red margins so we can see if it spreads. Since I’m pretty sure the surgeon was drunk when she cut me (honestly, it’s the ugliest incision I’ve ever seen), and I nearly pass out every time I look at it, I’ve been making Travis keep tabs on it. He says it looks like a fat lady’s lips (imagine the redness and swelling on either side - sorry for the gross mental image). I think this might be the end of the low rise bikini for me. My spinal headache, on the other hand, is gone! I’d forgotten what it felt like to stand up without being in extreme pain and fighting tears back. So that’s definitely a positive.
My mother-in-law and sister-in-law are in town for the week and yesterday was my first real outing. We went to ToysRus so Gramma could get Jack and Shane a Radio Flyer wagon. We also went to the bridal shop so I could try on my bridesmaid dress for my sister’s wedding, which is only 7 weeks away! Umm, I ended up with my pre-pregnancy size…except with a 1 in front of it!! Travis protested making the drive for me to try on the dress. He thought we should just call the bridal salon and ask them to try stuffing 2 watermelons, horizontally, inside a dress. Then they could just let us know what size dress could accommodate that.
Other than that, things are under control. It’s nice to have Travis’ mom and sister here for the extra help and sets of hands. Shane is getting lots of lovin’ and is enjoying all the attention. Jackson is doing great, taking all the changes in stride. The boys have started playing together a lot more recently and it’s absolutely hysterical! The bathtub time is my favorite - they crack up splashing each other and putting bubbles on each other’s heads. Travis and I died laughing today when we turned around and there was a boat upside down on Shane’s head - I WISH I had a picture of that!
Finley is just so precious. She seems to be practicing all her expressions for the future - the “how-could-you?!” face, the “that’s-peculiar” face, the “I-just-passed-gas-and-am-in-ecstasy” face. Seriously, she’s such a little lady - she looks so feminine, so peaceful, so perfect. And then, there’ll be a little rumble, and next, that little smile spreads across her face. She flashes those adorable dimples. I swear, she’s the daintiest, cutest little farter you’ve ever seen. But oh, I fear that with 2 older brothers, and Travis as her father…this just might be more than a newborn thing!
Here’s Gramma with her newest grandbaby, and Aunt Heather with Little Miss Finley too.

I am so glad yhe headaches are gone, sorry about the incision. Oh I have missed you so much! Everyone looks great. Travis is a real comedian! You have such beautiful babies.
All the kids are so cute and such a hoot. I can’t wait to see Finley as she grows with those two big brothers and -ahem- sarcastic father. I suppose he figures you can’t move too quickly to smack him what with your incision issue when he makes those watermelon comments, eh? Good thing he’s got a lot of good qualities too…
Glad your headache is gone, hope the incision heals up soon too. What a crazy ride.
Hey there - sorry to hear about your scar acting up…mine is okay. Yes I said, *mine*. That’s because surprise surprise, I had my baby 2 whole weeks early. A rare form of pre-eclampsia. Hubby just brought my Macbook in to the hospital today (I’ve been dying to tell everyone!), so I’m going to blog about it after new baby’s next feed! Anyhoo stop by and read about it if you’re interested
(So much for *MY* perfect birth plan too!)
I think it’s great that J & S are bonding more - I wish I could have seen that upside down boat on Shanes head - too cute!
I am so glad your headaches are gone. Don’t waint too long get some antibiodics on board if you really suspect infection. I think Finley is so cute and Jack looks so great with Shane in the tub. Did you cut his hair? He really has a georgous face.
Congrats! We are still praying for a speedy recovery.
Karen
Loving my 3 boys and waiting for Hannah!
I really hope you don’t have infection, but I’m glad you are both staying on top of things. What are you thinking trying on dresses a week after delivery???? Ugh, I always feel like I’m a chubby sausage link stuffed into too-small casing.
I really hope you begin feeling your old self again. Your birth experience was quite traumatic and will likely take longer than average to heal, but I hope for your sake it speeds up!
The kids look beautiful! If your family is anything like my family, the “boys” in the family will teach her the art of farting before she is even potty trained. Have fun!
I’m so sorry about your incision- I hope it heals soon. Those infections are so painful! Don’t wait much longer to get it checked, they can go from bad to worse like you wouldn’t believe… But of course, you know that- Dr. Laurie. Glad your headache is gone. You’ve really been through the wringer, you poor baby.
Finley is such a doll baby! I love the shot with Travis, with her little lippies pursed into an “O,” and her serious expression in the close-up. CUTE!! Love the pic of those beautiful boys! You guys are very blessed!
Oh my gosh she looks os big already! She has grown so much in not even 2 weeks! She’ll be walking by the time I meet her!
Your boys look so alike and similar in age in that tub photo. How funny! I bet you are destined for a decade of “are they twins?”
VERY funny story about the dress fitting. Travis is sure a crackup
Seriously how impossible would it be to fit a dress now - it would be falling off in 7 weeks! Good luck with that one!
I swear, your delivery drama is going to stop at some point. I really hope it is not infected. I agree with Nicki, Finley has changed a lot already. She looks so cute and cuddly. The boys in the tub could not be any more precious. Glad that they are playing together more. Imagine how fun it will be this summer when Shane can really get in on the action.
Got a good laugh out of the watermelon comment. Thanks for the update. I still check in a lot to see how you are doing.
Hey darlin’!!! Ugh, please, please don’t land yourself in the E.R. I had a post-op infection over a year ago…not fun. I will say my prayers, keep fingers crossed and stand on my head in hope that you stay healthy. The kids are looking absolutely beautiful and happy, happy, happy! This is so wonderful for all of you!
Keep in mind that bridesmaid dress sizes makes no sense in the “real world”…same with bridal gowns. They are always miles above what your regular size is! Isn’t that cruel, to do that when you are trying on something that you want to look and feel good in? Just wanted to mention that so you don’t feel too badly about whatever number they came up with
Finley is a doll and the boys are such cutie-pies. Hoping that everything is right as rain very soon.
I am glad your headache gone, but seriously, I don’t think you deserve a bad incision and infection on top of everything you went through! Glad things are going well. All 3 kiddos are so cute!
Things are getting better, every one of you is making progress each day. Prayers that the incision will start healing ASAP!! (and I’m sorry, but that is just mean to make you try on a bridesmaid dress barely a week after you gave birth!!)
Trying on a dress a few weeks after delivery?! That ain’t right! I’m so glad that your spinal headache is gone. Your boys look adorable in the tub together and Finley is beautiful. You have three precious kids!
All I can say is I’m so impressed you actually can manage to update your blog! You are doing 10x better than I was with a newborn! Way to go Laurie!
well that just sucks if you have an infection- sorry to hear that!! beautiful photos of the babies!!
I’ve missed you…it’s very quiet around blog world without you. Thankfully that headache is gone. I hope your not gettting an infection, that’s the last thing you need. It’s great you’ve had family around to help out and even happier that you continue to have a great attitude and can laugh at your kiddos and joke about your body. :0)
Oh, Laurie!
I am so sorry that your recovery continues to become more complicated. I had lots of crazy things happen after Bryant was born for 12+ months after, including recurring breast infections, conveniently followed by the most horrible insomnia (lasted for a over a year) that sends shivers up my spine in remembering it. I remembering crying many different times, wondering whether or not I would ever feel normal again. I can now say that I feel like I’ve reclaimed my body, and I feel wonderful, but there was a time I wouldn’t have thought that was possible. You’ll get through this, and will be a much more effective mother and doctor as a result. Sometimes there is no better teacher of the attribute of empathy than sad experience. I can’t help reflecting through this what a wonderful doctor you will be to parents in the future who face similar discouraging and difficult circumstances. That connection–that understanding–will go farther than I express when a patient feels alienated and desperate and is looking for kindness and guidance.
We love you and think of you and Travis often. I can’t get enough of the pictures. Finley is an absolute doll, and I love seeing the boys at work together. It reminds me so much of my sons. Though it’s really tough at times to have kids this close together, I can honestly say I LOVE having the boys 12 months apart now. They’re absolutely inseparable, and defend each other to the death (even though they sometimes go the rounds together). I love that they defend their little sister together as well. Finley is in for some seriously good times!
love,
A (& S)
Love the pictures and descriptions of your family
The boys are really cute and it’s fun seeing them bond to each other and how sweet they are with Finley. Hope that you don’t have problems with your incision healing. What a major pain in the !#@@ when you have so many little people that want to be held.
I’m glad to hear that nasty headache finally left you. I wish the rest of you were feeling better though! I’m very glad you have family there to help out.
Finley looks like a little doll. So sweet!
It’s going to be so fun when Shane can walk. He and Jackson will be running all over the place! I know my guys do.
good lord woman, could anything else happen??? an infection? i can barely stand it when i have a cold.
i think i might have actually died by this point.
i love the photos of the boys in the tub. they are going to be such good buddies.
and finley is looking just as fetching as ever….
xo
Where did Finley get those blue eyes???? She looks cuter every time I see her.
OMG!! They are so cute!! Just want to eat them up. Jack is looking quite handsome, sporting his new haircut. What a big boy!! The bathtub pics are priceless. It gets better each and everyday. They will have a blast this summer!! Finley is just a little dolly. I realize I say that everytime I post, but come on….she is!! Hopefully you escaped a major infection and can be back to “Normal” soon. Enjoy those babies and wishing you nothing but happiness!!
Oh my word - you guys have the most beautifully gorgeous children! I think I would just sit around all the time staring at them, thinking what beautiful kids I had! (Pretty much what i do with my son now)….
I’m so glad you have such helpful family members - YAY for reinforcements!
