One Week

Finley is 1 week old today.

DSC_0661

She’s doing well and weighed in at a whopping 7lbs 1oz yesterday.  Yeah, she’s a peanut.  I always wondered what you’d get if you crossed chicken legs with tree trunks.  Well, the answer turns out to be chicken legs!!  She has her daddy’s lower body for sure - these teeny little legs that run into her long, slender feet, with the super sized 2nd toe, of course.  There’s not a roll of extra fat on our little peanut…which begs the question, why the heck did my body gain 51lbs and hog it all from the baby?!  I’m SUCH a pig!  Hopefully breastfeeding will pork her up some though.

There’s so much more I want to say, but my spinal headache returned yesterday and I’m having trouble spending time upright again.  Turns out the blood patch only gave me about 24 hours of relief.  I can’t bring myself to have that painful procedure performed again, as my back is still totally black and blue, and I now have a really intense rash covering most of it as well.  I just have to wait this one out and pray it abates soon.  We’re surviving over here pretty well, all things considered.  Travis and I have stopped to laugh at our situation so hard a few times that I thought I busted some stitches open.  I am terrified of Travis starting in the hospital a week from Monday, and am just trying to take it all 1 day at a time right now.  I miss my mom.  I’m emotionally labile.  I’m hoping it’s all within the normal range.  If I could just get rid of this headache…

Anyway, here are some cute pictures of the babies.

Shane turned 9 months old today!  Doesn’t he just look so much more like a kid and less of a baby already?!  I can’t stand how fast it’s all going!  He’s been doing really well these past few days.  He’s such a sweetheart and has been really affectionate lately.  He loves this new gliding rocking chair my mom got us and lets me hold and rock in it until he’s either totally sedated, or passes out all snuggled in my arms.

Hi Laurie,

I’m so glad you are doing better and can still find something to laugh at after all you’ve been through. Love Shane’s pic with Finley…..just precious.

Cutest family ever…

Such a gorgeous family :) - “Jacksons’ 5″ - Hee hee. Yeah like you haven’t heard *that* one before!

I hope your spinal headache sorts itself out soon - it must be very hard with the added discomfort - plus the thought of it all being on you once T man starts his rotations. At least he’s still home another week though! My hubby gets 5 whole days of paternity leave off…my mom is also coming to help, but she’ll only be here an extra 3 days after hubby goes back to work…scary stuff. It really does take a village :) On the plus side, the Bubby’s playgroup are taking him on an extra 2 days a week, which means that I will have 4 mornings a week from 8-12 to myself with the new baby - which isn’t much - but it’s a start! Bubby is totally buzzing about the extra time though, he can’t wait for these school holidays to be over - he’s back at school on the 14th, two days before our c-sec date.

Anyway - I just wanted to let you know we’re thinking of you, and hope your recovery is speedy!! Hey if I was any closer I’d offer to have J man over for a playdate I’m sure him and Bubby would get on really well :)

Hi Laurie

OMG I thought Travis had the whole summer off!! I hope that you are feeling much more like yourself when he has to do his rotations, otherwise it is really worrying for you.

I wish I lived nearby, I would so help out!

Thinking of you.

Debbie

some thoughts-
Shane is just beyond precious- those pics make me want to snatch him up and snuggle him like crazy.
Jackson is *SUCH* a rock star, seriously, that picture where he is pointing…. at the camera when trav is holding finley….
I can’t handle the pic of Shane and finley, precious…..

Um, tell me you have some kind of help when trav starts in the hospital……you have some friends coming don’t you?
I remember when we got home from Vietnam with khai, Bailey was 3 and Sam was 2 and Khai was almost 8 months, Sheldon could take off any more work, and I was on my own….and those first months with 3 kids so close together was really hard, especially with no sleep…

I KNOW you are a stronger woman than I, and I keep hoping that somehow 3 kids all less than a year apart is easier than 3 kids all less than 16 months apart….I am praying girl….

Love the new pictures- all of your kids are just precious. If your Finley is anything like mine, you will soon have a slightly bull-headed but oh so loving nearly three year old on your hands.

Your kiddos are just adorable! I also had a horrible rash after my first son was born. It turned out to be PUPPP. Some kind of dermatitis thing. Only some special topical steriod healed it. It got out of hand pretty quick, SO you may want to have your checked out before it gets too bad! Just wanted to pass along the tip. Glad that things are better with Shane. Again, your kids are precious.

I can’t wait to see all these adorable babies! I promise Dom and Sarah and I won’t let you lift a finger! You get to sit on the couch and boss us around….ha…..looking forward to laughing with you and Trav at your situation…..cuz from here it doesn’t look so funny….you know I say that while smiling!…I can certainly see the overwhelming part! But I am so proud of you guys and how you’re holding it together so far. Wish we could just pop in and take a kid or 2 off your hands, or drop off dinner or something!!!

Those pics are precious. You can feel the love. I am so happy Shane is doing better.
As for you Laurie I hope this headache goes away fast that you can be yourself again. No medication at all can help? Did you try massages and pressure. I remember after I had a lumbar puncture I had an awful migraine because of the difference of pressure and my in laws doctors did some kind of very strong massage pressure points around the neck and shoulders and it was gone! Don’t sure if what you have is the same kind of thing.
Do you have friends coming over? Or some neighbours to help you? I wish I could come over.
As you said, take one day at a time and just focus on the kiddos and you. The house, the rest can wait. Sending tons of positive vibes your way.

Finley seems to be gaining weight quickly!! She is so tiny. Glad that Shane is doing so well - I knew he would bounce right back. He was just confused. Love the pictures. Spinal headache - GO AWAY!!!!!

12 Kelly { 04.02.08 at 6:50 am }

Your family is just so beautiful. I hope your headache abates ASAP. I cannot imagine how beat up you feel! Hang in there and enjoy those beautiful babies… I feel like shane kind of looks like our ben. He’s gorgeous! (I’m a LITTLE biased).

Hi,
I have been following your story since the fall and just wanted to say congrats on your gorgeous family! Yours is an inspiring tale and I’m in awe of the energy that you and Travis must have! :-) Best of luck in the coming weeks and months, and I look forward to following the your next adventures :-)

14 anna { 04.02.08 at 8:47 am }

LOVE that you haven’t cut jackson’s hair yet. i know it will probably come eventually, but he’s precious with his rockstar hair!

15 Nicki { 04.02.08 at 10:10 am }

Wow, you sound so much better! I sure hope that damned spinal headache is gone for good soon. The pictures are beautiful (and oddly missing a mama) and yes Shane looks huge but I’m sure part of that is because you also have your tiny princess for direct comparison. Funny enough, every picture I see I keep thinking how tiny Jack looks!!

ANd it must be said that you must be doing REALLY well in the boob department for Finley to already regain her birth weight and then some! WOOHOO! Go Boob!

16 Sara { 04.02.08 at 10:21 am }

The breastfeeding will bulk her up and bulk you down! Keep up the good work…everyone looks happy and healthy. And along the lines of what Nicki said, we need some pictures of Mama with her babies :)

17 Sarah { 04.02.08 at 10:45 am }

Those are great photos! Everyone looks wonderful. Sending you healing vibes for a speedy recovery.

18 Kelli K { 04.02.08 at 11:57 am }

Finely is adorable! Love the pictures of her with her big brothers! And you are right, what happened to Shane’s baby face? They grow up too fast! Hope your spinal headache gets better. I had one after a back procedure. It was NO fun, but it only lasted about 2 days. And I didn’t have 3 little ones to take care of!

19 Delyn { 04.02.08 at 2:03 pm }

What a beautiful family you have! I hope that your headache goes away soon!! Thanks for keeping us updated - I know that you have lots of other things taking your time now too!

20 Mindy Pannell { 04.02.08 at 2:41 pm }

Wow! Shane looks so grown up! His eyes just kill me, so gorgeous and soulful. I can’t wait to see pics of all three of your babes enjoying the outdoors as everyone heals and feels better!

21 Dawn { 04.02.08 at 3:30 pm }

I LOVE the picture of Jackson and Finley. He looks so little in it. I am glad that you are beginning to feel better and I hope they can get your spinal headaches controlled. Thanks for more beautiful pictures of your gorgeous kids!

22 Karen Skinner { 04.02.08 at 3:35 pm }

I will pray for relief from your headache. Please pray we can get our Hannah home. We are stuck in this flexing of muscles between USCIS HCMC and Vietnam. It seems there is so much up in the air. I am in desperate need of answers. I am trusting God on this totally.
Karen

23 Tracy { 04.02.08 at 4:08 pm }

IV caffeine has helped me with a spinal headache. Good luck

24 Erin { 04.02.08 at 4:31 pm }

All the pictures are so sweet! I love how Jack is already trying to entertain his little sis. Such a cutie! And I’m glad Shane is back to his sweet, cuddly self. I hope you get back to normal soon. You must be pretty miserable - rash, headache, sore stomach and probably some tender boobs. I hope they all clear up by tomorrow!

25 Carissa { 04.02.08 at 7:19 pm }

I so hope that you are 100% soon and I LOVE that picture of Jackson and Finley!

26 Margaret { 04.03.08 at 5:10 am }

Beautiful pictures! I agree with other posters; I’d love to see pictures of mom and babies (and the whole family) when you’re feeling better. (Is it just my warped cynical perspective, or is Shane trying to poke Finley in the eye?!?!? To get a kid’s perspective, I asked my 5 year old daughter what she thought was going on in the picture and she thought so too!)

27 Suzie { 04.03.08 at 7:13 pm }

Too cute!! Have you been told lately that you have the most amazing family!! Praying that your headache is gone!!! I just love the pictures of “the 3 babies”. Nice, Nice baby and then I poke your eye out or give you a loving whack on the head. Oh, the joys of Parenting!! It just goes by WAY too fast. Hope you guys are getting some help at home. Tell Travis good luck at the hospital. Big squeezes coming your way from Iowa.

28 Michelle { 04.04.08 at 10:56 am }

Ugh! How I wish I lived closer to you too. I hope that damn spinal headache goes away SOON! Great pics as always. Hope you’re hanging in there.

29 Blayne { 04.04.08 at 2:48 pm }

Laurie, I read your birth story and cried. Several times. My husband made fun of me, since I don’t even know you in person. But boy I could relate, even though my c-section was very complication-free. I also tried for the intervention free route and felt that we were given a lot of time and flexibility, but I cried so hard when it was time to admit that we needed the c-section. I still wonder what made that the case. What would have happened without modern medicine? I felt like I was letting down my husband, who of course was incredibly supportive. Anyway, I thought of you and Travis and Finley and Jackson and Shane all week. I hope your recovery is speedy. Thank you for sharing your story. It makes me feel better to know that I’m not alone in my experiences…

30 S. { 04.05.08 at 3:59 am }

Beautiful pictures, sweet sweet Shane is so precious! Of course Finley is gorgeous. I hope your headache is better! Wish I were close to help…

31 Sandy { 04.05.08 at 10:27 am }

Aww, how sweet! :) All of your kiddos are precious! I wanted to say don’t worry too much about Finley not having rolls yet - they usually don’t start getting them till later - around 2 months or so. :) And sometimes breastfed babies have a slower weight gain process than formula fed babies, and that is perfectly normal to see, too. She’s just going to gain weight in her own sweet time! :)

32 StorkWatcher { 04.10.08 at 11:14 am }

I’m SO happy to hear how well Shane’s doing! I can’t imagine how your separation from him and the extra challenges now were eating at you. What a great kid! Sorry the headache’s back. Yuck.
