My Meat Paws

Ok, since I don’t think most of you took that post about my swelling very seriously because I used a picture of someone else’s gross foot I found on google images, I’ve decided to reveal something far more disgusting than that picture.  Yes, these are my REAL feet.  Kelly, I know that imposter photo made you barf a little and swallow it, so you might want to divert your eyes NOW…otherwise face projectile potential.

When I say swollen, I mean PITTING EDEMA.  GARGANTUAN CANKLES.  FUNKDEFIED PIGGIES.  HOBBIT FEET.  MEAT PAWS.  As I just told Kelly, a little hair on the toes and I could’ve doubled for Froto.  Even my hands are huge now, and I’ve developed a nice little case of carpal tunnel syndrome that causes me to wake up at night with numbness and tingling shooting down my fingers.  But I swear, I still love pregnancy…am I convincing, or what?!!

Ok, without further ado, meet my meat paws:

That “pit” (the indentation made by my finger pressing) remained for ~30 minutes after I made the mark.

I called it the “inside out ankle.”

The gross stuff on the soles of my feet is NOT fungus, in case that makes it less nasty to anyone out there.  It’s extremely dry, rough skin that requires me to wear socks everywhere, or face being stuck to the rug in our family room.  Are you sufficiently repulsed yet?  I have a feeling I’ve seen the end of my “you’re a cute pregnant lady” comments!!  Hahahaha, but it’s time you all know the truth.  Anyone else hungry, cuz I’m starved!

So, Travis is in the midst of his boards right now and I’m SO excited for him/us to almost have this test be a thing of the past!  He should only have another, oh, 7 hours to go in there.  My sister left early this morning, and I’m missing her so much already.  I basically had a week long vacation while she was here.  It would have been my toughest week ever - 39 weeks pregnant, doctor disaster, husband away all day and night studying.  Instead, she cooked, spoiled us with gifts, cleaned, played with the babies, made me laugh and pee my pants constantly, and just let me relax and have fun.  She also reminded me how cute and fun my little guys are, just as I was feeling a little burned out on SAH mommyhood.  She finds out where she matches for residency this week, but I know she won’t end up all that nearby.  And as an intern, she’ll hardly have much time to come visit.  I do think we’ll eventually settle near each other, but it makes me so sad that for the next few years, at a minimum, we’re going to live far away.  So of my adult siblings, 1 lives in the most remote region possible of Siberia, 1 will be an intern someplace that might as well be Siberia, and the other might end up in China when he finishes school.  As Swiper the Fox would say, “Oh maaaaaaaaan!”

Anyway, thanks to everyone for all the positive thoughts and energy.  It seems Belly Baby is staying put for now.  No action YET, anyway.  My mom and littlest sister fly in tonight, so that should be fun!  They’ll be here just in time to celebrate Travis’ boards being DONE.  I’ll keep you posted on the labor status if anything does happen.

I’m so glad there isn’t a labor post here yet! Your feet do look incredibly uncomfortable so I hope s/he comes out tomorrow so the swelling can start going down. Wishing Travis a perfect memory and calm nerves! Your almost through this longest day ever!

You’ve been thrown into a wirl-wind the past day or so but you still manage to have a great, humorous attitide by posting those crazy looking, painful appearing feet. I’m glad your sister was there to make things easier for you and glad to hear more family is on the way to help out. I can’t believe belly baby is almost here…I can’t wait to read the labor post. :0)

Wow. You are getting so close! I’m glad that you enjoy your pregnancy, swollen feet and all. I loved being pregnant. I can’t wait to read all about your labor too. And hopefully it won’t last well over 24 hours like mine did! My sister lucked out in that all three of her kids were born within an hour of starting labor. She hardly got a chance to get into it before they were out.

I still think you’re a cute pregnant lady. ;)

You’re still a cute pregnant lady, but cuter with your socks on. So glad there’s no labor yet today. I’m predicting the big day will be… Wednesday. Unless, of course, Wed. comes and goes, then I reserve the right to change my vote without having to admit I was wrong. Go get those feet propped up!!

Oh my goodness!!! Ouch. I am so so so very thankful that I never had any swollen feet through 3 pregnancies. Two of them in the heavy heat of our South African summer.
By now Travis should be done with the boards. Let him know that I’m very happy for him (and gosh for you too)

OH hey - you’re my foot twin right now! Don’t cankles really suck!!?? My hubby also calls mine my Hobbit Feet, I have to keep reminding him that they are WAY less hairy than the hobbit feet were!! Although I’ve gotten him and Bubby into a routine where they rub my poor stiff and swollen ankles with cream every night - it’s absolute heaven. I hope Travis’ exams go well, fingers and swollen toes all crossed here! Also, just keep telling Belly Baby to stay put until Daddy’s available, I’m sure they’re listening by this stage!

lol, thanks for the laugh ;)
So glad belly baby has stayed put today. I was actually on a walk on the moors and thought “oh I wonder how L is I hope belly baby is behaving”

I am glad Belly Baby held off while Daddy took his exams! I have to agree- you are still a cute pregnant lady. And while I am sure they aren’t fun, the dry feet have to be better than the nails on the poor soul’s foot that was pictured in the previous post!

Hope that you enjoy your time with your mom and little sis! I hope that Belly Baby shows up soon that looks uncomfortable.

Ok, so I am borderline freak internet stalker at this point….
I’ve been praying today!
I can’t wait to *see* her!;)

Okay, I am not going to lie, those are pretty bad - still not near as awful as the other picture you posted though. If it makes you feel any better, my sister’s feet and ankles were swollen more than that. I think for your gift for having a baby, I will send you a pumice stone!!!!!! The sweet Vietnamese ladies at my pedicure place would have a hay day with those. They would have that dry skin remover razor blade thingy going to town. Let us know how Trav thinks he did. So glad this day is over, or almost over, for you guys.

I am so freaking excited about bb I can’t stand it!!!

12 Suzie { 03.15.08 at 6:01 pm }

Oh, Jena…I may have you beat. I’m feeling a little obsessed with this whole blog thing…just love reading your “story”, Laurie. I have been checking your blog like crazy today…just waiting to see word on BB. My husband thinks I’m a little freakin’ nutso!!! “Your waiting for who to have their baby??” Praying for the perfect arrival of your little princess(going with pink on this one). Take care of yourself…put those paws up. Good luck to you…waitin to hear in Iowa.

Okay, eeewwww on the feet. I luv ya, Laurie - but eeewwww! :) I can’t believe the crappy luck on your doc having to depart, but I’m glad you worked around the troll at your hospital and got to a midwife. Does the troll just like to kick people while they are down or what?? I’m cheering for you and baby belly. Good luck!!

14 Jen { 03.15.08 at 6:09 pm }

Yea! (or not) I didn’t miss Belly Baby’s arrival! And since today is 3/15 I’m going to assume that Travis is all done with the boards. Whew! And glad to hear that you found a midwife to help you out. That is not the type of stress you need right now!

15 Nicki { 03.15.08 at 8:14 pm }

I hate feet! I hate my feet, I hate everyone’s feet! I won’t tell you what cute pregnant feet you have, I promise!! Damn, that is some pitting.

Please have your baby on Monday so we can share st. patty’s day birthday babies ok? Thanks.

16 Stacy { 03.15.08 at 8:57 pm }

Ok, those feet look really dang uncomfortable. Not as creepy as that other picture thank goodness, but not fun. Have been thinking about you all day, watching the clock, glad that it seems you have made it through to the end of Travis’ big day and now Baby Belly can make *her* appearance for us all! And I just cannot believe the trouble you had with the medical person, how evil is she to be so rude and mean to someone about to deliver a baby? What did she think you should do, for crying out loud? I’m so glad you found someone that will work for you.

Hoping your next post is full of good news (and no more scary pictures, though I wouldn’t put it past you!).

Laurie,
I have to tell you I had feet like that and it was pitting enema up to my knees with my belly baby #2 who was 8.8. He was the biggest of my 3 boys. I am guessing you are having a boy and you will be able to say “My three sons” like me. It was like elephant legs and I remember standing in front of a class teaching hospital nursing orientation and a nurse in the class asking me if I was eclamptic. It was incredible, I had crinkles and lines of skin stretched at my ankles because they could not stretch any more. Baby #1 (2.5 years old) would put cold lotion on my legs for me, it felt so good. Wait until you deliver and all the fluid is gone, about 2-3 days later you will again see the metatarsals in your feet and ankle bone that is now hidden and you will freak and think you have anorexic ankles. It is funny. :o)
I love following your blog too. I am anxiously awaiting I 600 approval and Hague meeting update for our now 9.5 month old little Hannah in Quang Nam, Vietnam.

Hey Laurie-

That cracks me up about your ankles. I remember the day after Devin was born how happy I was to see my ankle bones. Everyone thought it was a weird thing to say when I was staring at my legs in my hospital bed. I felt the need to show everyone- Hey look- I got ankle bones. The extra water weight from my face and ankles literally disappeared overnight after giving birth. I don’t know where the water went b/c I could hardly pee. Hmmm… Hoping you have a fast birth and healthy baby!!!

[...] In the meantime, I am suffering from a severe form of cankles.  You might recall the swelling in my feet/ankles/legs when I was 39wks pregnant with Fin…well, this is even worse.  Behold, my cankles (btw, the “belly button” on my ankle is [...]
